BBL winners list is a year-wise compilation of the winners of the Australia-based Big Bash League, which takes place in December-January every year.

As of now, there are eight BBL squads that currently exist.

History of BBL

The Big Bash League was played for the first time in 2011. The tournament replaced the previous tournament KFC T20 Big Bash, which had five state teams.

• Here, there were eight city-based franchises that would compete against each other.
• Back in 2016/17, it was the only second T20 league to have featured in the coveted list of “Top Ten sports leagues in terms of attendance.” 
• Unlike some of its competitors, BBL hasn’t undergone any expansion.
• It had 8 teams right from its inaugural season in 2011. However, the authorities have plans to expand the league with four new teams in the fray. These are Geelong, Canberra, Gold Coast, and New Castle.

There are also talks to make it a Trans-Tasman tournament by setting up a franchise in New Zealand.

BBL Format

Since its inception, the tournament has followed the same format except in 2011 where it saw 28 group-stage matches. The very next year that is in 2012, the number of matches extended to 32.

• Nevertheless, from the 2018-19 season, each team plays the other twice in the season, which totals 56 regular season matches before the finals.
• In previous seasons, the group stage was divided into eight rounds, with each round having four matches each.
• Each team took on six teams once, while one team they would take on twice. 
• Each team plays eight group stage matches, four home and four away. 

After this, the four top teams would progress to the semi-finals.

Most Successful Team In BBL

The Perth Scorchers are the most successful side in the Big Bash League. They have won the title five times.

Melbourne Stars, Perth Scorchers, and Sydney Sixers have done quite well to reach the finals multiple times.
