Fastest fifty in IPL (Indian Premier League) is a record that has been rewritten several times. The quick-fire half-centuries are a sheer delight for cricket fans. Indian and overseas players have held the record. And as cricket continues to evolve, the fastest half-century record in IPL will be rewritten again and again.
Fastest Half Century in IPL may sound easy, but it is a herculean task. With the data collected and used to analyze a batsman, any team can come up with a strategy for a specific batsman and restrict his run flow. Even then, we have a list of players who crossed this milestone. Some did faster too!
Fastest Fifty in IPL – A Brief History
Brendon McCullum is the first player to surpass a 50+ score in the IPL. The former New Zealand captain brought up his half-century in just 32 balls and went into carnage mode, remaining unbeaten on 158 off just 73 balls in the IPL curtain-raiser.
In the 2009 season, Adam Gilchrist, playing for the then-Delhi Daredevils, registered an IPL fifty in less than 20 balls. The swashbuckling wicketkeeper batter ripped apart the Deccan Chargers bowlers to record a 17-ball fifty.
Five years later, Yusuf Pathan rewrote history books by hitting an IPL fifty in 15 balls. At Eden Gardens, Yusuf Pathan struck a match-winning 22-ball 72 against Sunrisers Hyderabad. The record stood for almost three years.
Youngest Player to get the Fastest 50 Record in IPL
Priyam Garg – the youngest player to hit a fifty in IPL – took only 23 balls to bring up his maiden fifty in the league. He was only 17 when he played that brilliant knock against Chennai Super Kings at Dubai International Stadium in the 2020 season.
We had Prithiv Shaw, Gill (who scored a double century in ODIs) and Shreyas Iyer. They had the chance to achieve this feat. However, Garg took it in a classic style.
No existing capped player can break this record, as they all are now older. As many young uncapped players have been bought by franchises, this year we may have a chance to witness record-breaking innings by youngsters.
The Fastest Fifty in IPL history
KL Rahul and Pat Cummins jointly hold the record for the fastest fifty in IPL. The opening batter scored a 14-ball fifty against Delhi Capitals at IS Bindra Stadium in the 2018 season. Chasing 167, the then-Kings XI Punjab skipper was in a hurry. Rahul hit six fours and four sixes on his way to a record-breaking fifty.
Pat Cummins has done wonders with the ball but grabbed headlines for his exploits with the bat last season. He came to Kolkata Knight Riders’ rescue against Mumbai Indians in a league stage fixture in IPL 2022. The 29-year-old arrived at the crease with his side needing 61 off seven overs. After scoring 22 of his first eight balls, he struck four sixes and two fours off Daniel Sam in the 16th over and wrapped up the chase and his maiden IPL fifty in just 14 balls.

Legendary South Africa batter AB de Villiers is no stranger to quickfire half-centuries. The former Royal Challengers Bangalore player smashed eight IPL fifties in less than 25 balls. Meanwhile, Sachin Tendulkar’s fastest fifty came in just 23 balls against the Delhi-based franchise in 2010.
T20 List
Yuvraj Singh, Chris Gayle, and Afghanistan’s Hazratullah Zazai jointly hold the fastest fifty record in T20s. The three players took only 12 balls to bring up their half-century. Yuvraj’s record-breaking knock came against England in the 2007 T20 World Cup, while Gayle and Hazai equaled the feat in the Big Bash League and Afghanistan Premier League, respectively.
