Hat-trick in IPL is a club that has plenty of members. From Lakshmipathy Balaji to Yuzvendra Chahal, 18 cricketers have achieved this feat. We look at all the players who have taken hat-tricks in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
First Hat-Trick in IPL
The first-ever hat-trick in IPL came in the Chennai Super Kings and Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) fixture at MA Chidambaram Stadium in the 2008 season. The Mohali-based outfit needed 19 runs off the final four fall balls while chasing 182. Lakshmipathy Balaji created history after dismissing Irfan Pathan, Piyush Chawla, and Vikram Singh in successive balls.
The pacer registered figures of 5/24 and became the first Indian to pick up a five-wicket haul in IPL.
Amit Mishra and Makhaya Ntini managed to clinch a hat-trick in the first season of the IPL. Delhite became the first spinner to take the same in IPL, while Ntini, who represented Chennai Super Kings then, was the first overseas player to do so.
Hat-trick in IPL: Amit Mishra
Veteran spinner Amit Mishra has taken the most hat-tricks in IPL. After his maiden hat-trick in the inaugural IPL season, he took two more hat-tricks in the IPL.
In 2011 in Dharamsala, Mishra got the wickets of Kings XI Punjab’s Ryan McLaren, Mandeep Singh, and Ryan Harris in successive balls. Two years later, he helped Sunrisers Hyderabad clinch a low-scoring thriller courtesy of removing Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Rahul Sharma, and Ashok Dinda in consecutive balls.

Yuvraj’s Double Hat-trick in IPL
Yuvraj Singh is the only player to take two hat-tricks in an IPL season. While captaining Kings XI Punjab, the all-rounder took his maiden hat-trick in IPL by removing Royal Challengers Bangalore’s Robin Uthappa, Jacques Kallis, and Mark Boucher and also struck a half-century in the match.
Against Deccan Chargers
Two weeks later, the former India international got the wicket of Herschelle Gibbs in the final ball of the 12th over. Yuvraj dismissed Andrew Symonds and cleaned up Venugopal Rao in the first two balls of the 14th over to achieve the unique feat.
Rohit Sharma, Sam Curran, Pravin Tambe
In the 2009 season, Rohit Sharma took a hat-trick in IPL against his current employers, Mumbai Indians. The part-time spinner’s victims were Abhishek Nayar, Harbhajan Singh, and Jean-Paul Duminy. The ‘Hitman’ finished the match with figures of 4/6. However, he has bowled just seven balls in the last eight seasons of the IPL.
Apart from Mishra and Yuvraj Singh, no player has taken more than one hat-trick in the world’s best T20 league. There were no hat-tricks during 2015, 2018, and 2020 seasons. Yuzvendra Chahal is the latest player to join the club, while the IPL’s most expensive player Sam Curran is the latest overseas cricketer to clinch three wickets in three balls.
Ajit Chandila, Pravin Tambe, and Harshal Patel are three uncapped players to take a hat-trick. Harshal made his debut for India a few months later. Chadila and Tamble remain uncapped. Lasith Malinga, who played for nine seasons in IPL, has taken two hat-tricks in T20Is but didn’t pick up one in IPL.
Kolkata Knight Riders all-rounder Andre Russell is the first player to take four wickets in an over. He sent Abhinav Manohar and Lockie Ferguson back to the pavilion in the first two balls. Though he missed the hat-trick, Russell grabbed the wickets of Rahul Tewatia and Yash Dayal in the final two deliveries.
