IPL 2023 SRH franchise endured two disappointing seasons. The 2016 Indian Premier League (IPL) champions have made a major overhaul ahead of the 16th edition. The Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) faithful will be hoping that the IPL 2023 purchases and the key retained players can revive their fortunes in the new season.
IPL 2023 SRH Players
SRH bolstered its batting unit with the additions of Mayank Agarwal, Harry Brook, and Heinrich Klaasen in the auction. In Mayank, SRH will have an experienced opening batter with good leadership skills. Brook was one of the standout performers for England in 2022. He hit three centuries in Pakistan and was the player of the series in the three-match series.
Proteas duo Klaasen and Aiden Markram have a great deal of T20 experience. Opening batter Abhishek Sharma, who had a stint with Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals), was SRH’s top performer in IPL 2022, racking 426 runs at a strike rate of 139. With 414 runs in 13 innings, Rahul Tripathi, too, had an excellent campaign in the ‘Orange Army’ jersey. The 31-year-old struck three half-centuries in the last edition.
SRH has a top-class pace attack. The franchise retained Bhuvneshwar Kumar, T Natarajan, Marco Jansen, and Umran Malik. Bhuvneshwar, who wasn’t included in the white-ball series against Sri Lanka and New Zealand, will be keen to deliver quality performances and find a place in the Indian white-ball squad. Afghanistan’s Fazalhaq Farooqi and Kartik Tyagi are two other pace bowlers to keep an eye on in the SRH squad.
The spin department has proven players like Washington Sundar and Akeal Hosein. The duo produced impressive performances for their respective national teams in the last few years. England’s Adil Rashid and leg-spinner Mayank Markande are experienced spinners who will be keen to make an impact in the league.

Captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad
The SRH think-tank is yet to announce the captain for the IPL 2023 season. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mayank Agarwal, and Aiden Markram are the contenders to replace Kane Williamson, who was released ahead of the auction. The 32-year-old fast bowler has captained SRH on a couple of occasions. In seven matches under his captaincy, SRH has won just twice.
Mayank was Punjab Kings’ skipper last season. The Mohali-based outfit won half of the games under his leadership but failed to make the playoffs. Meanwhile, Markram has captained South Africa in a few ODIs in the absence of Faf du Plessis.

Head Coach
Legendary West Indies batsman Brian Lara was appointed SRH head coach a few months ago. The 53-year-old replaced Tom Moody – now the director of cricket of Desert Vipers – is taking up his first assignment as a head coach of a T20 team. He had donned the role of the strategic advisor and batting coach of the Hyderabad-based franchise in the IPL 2022 season.
IPL 2023 SRH Schedule
SRH has won a total of just nine matches in the last two seasons in the IPL. In the previous edition, SRH opened its campaign against Rajasthan Royals and picked up five wins in their first seven matches. But the franchise registered just one win in seven fixtures in the second half of the season. In 2021, the franchise claimed only three wins in 14 matches.
