IPL 2025: Retentions and Purse Remaining for All 10 Teams

If retention is anything to go by, IPL 2025 promises to be the ultimate exciting cricket season for enthusiasts. While some teams have retained their core team, others have opted to save their purse and take a call about players in the IPL 2025 auction. For the IPL 2025 auction, each team was given a purse of Rs. 120 Crores.

When were the Players Retained?

All the teams announced the list of the retained players on 31st October 2024. While Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Rajasthan Royals (RR), with 6 retentions each, were the two teams with the most retained players, Punjab Kings, with 2 retentions, had the fewest retained players.

IPL Retention 2025 List Team Wise

The following is the IPL retention list 2025 for all the 10 teams:

  • Mumbai Indians Retentions
  • For the IPL 2025 season, Mumbai Indians (MI) have decided to go with their core team, retaining Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Rohit Sharma, and Tilak Varma.

    MI is aware of the impact that Jasprit Bumrah, Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, and Hardik Pandya can have on a T20 match and hence has gone ahead with them while also retaining the promising young talent Tilak Varma.

  • Chennai Super Kings Retentions
  • Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has also retained 5 players, with MS Dhoni retained as an uncapped player. Ruturaj Gaikwad, the CSK captain, was an automatic pick, while Matheesha Pathirana was picked for his wicket-taking abilities. Shivam Dube and Ravindra Jadeja were retained for their all-round abilities.

  • Royal Challengers Bangalore Retentions
  • Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) went only for 3 retentions, with Virat Kohli being paid the most, 21 Crores. Rajat Patidar was picked to provide stability in the middle order, while Yash Dayal was picked to take wickets in the powerplay.

    Retained Players (3): Virat Kohli, Rajat Patidar, and Yash Dayal.

    Purse Remaining: 83 Crores.

  • Rajasthan Royals Retentions
  • Rajasthan Royals (RR) made the bold move to retain the core members of the team, retaining as many as 6 players. Sanju Samson was an obvious pick for his leadership role, while Yashasvi Jaiswal, Riyan Parag, Shimron Hetmyer, and Dhruv Jurel were picked for their batting prowess. Sandeep Sharma also made the cut for his ability to bowl brilliantly with new and old balls alike.

    Retained Players (6): Sanju Samson, Dhruv Jurel, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shimron Hetmyer, Riyan Parag, and Sandeep Sharma.

  • Kolkata Knight Riders Retentions
  • Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) is yet another team that has gone with 6 retentions, and surprisingly, there is no Shreyas Iyer in that list. Rinku Singh, Andre Russell, and Ramandeep Singh have been picked for their destructive batting, while Sunil Narine and Varun Chakaravarthy have been retained for their deceptive bowling. Harshit Rana, with his ability to bowl fast and accurately, has also made it to the KKR retention list.

  • Punjab Kings Retentions
  • Punjab Kings (PBKS) has made the most surprising move in IPL 2025 retentions, retaining only 2 players. Shashank Singh and Prabhsimran Singh are uncapped players, meaning PBKS did not have to spend much to retain them. While Shashank Singh is a reliable and aggressive finisher, Prabhsimran Singh can provide a solid start at the top.

  • Sunrisers Hyderabad Retentions
  • Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) decided to retain their impact players, with Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma set to reunite as dangerous openers. Captain Pat Cummins has been retained for his leadership role and fierce bowling, while Heinrich Klaasen remains with the team for his ability to take down any bowling attack. Nitish Kumar Reddy, who showed his all-round abilities, has also made it to the SRH retention list.

  • Gujarat Titans Retentions
  • Gujarat Titans (GT) has shown trust in the core team, retaining as many as 5 players. Captain Shubman Gill has been retained for his powerful batting at the top and leadership skills, while Rashid Khan has been picked for his ability to pick up wickets in middle overs. Sai Sudharsan was impacted at the number 3 position, while Rahul Tewatia and Shahrukh Khan made it to the GT retention list for their finishing abilities.

    Retained Players (5): Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill, Shahrukh Khan, Rahul Tewatia, and Rashid Khan.

    Purse Remaining: 69 Crores.

  • Lucknow Super Giants Retentions
  • Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) retained 5 players, with the destructive Nicholas Pooran being the most powerful pick. Ayush Badoni has been picked for his hitting in the end overs, while Ravi Bishnoi, Mayank Yadav, and Mohsin Khan have been retained for their wicket-taking abilities.

    Players Retained (5): Mayank Yadav, Ravi Bishnoi, Nicolas Pooran, Ayush Badoni, and Mohsin Khan.

    Purse Remaining: 69 Crores.

  • Delhi Capitals Retentions
  • For the IPL 2025 season, Delhi Capitals (DC) have retained only four players, with Rishabh Pant being the notable miss. Abhishek Porel has been picked to give solid starts at the top, while Tristan Stubbs will have to give a powerful finish. Axar Patel can bowl tightly and score crucial runs, while Kuldeep Yadav can bamboozle batters and pick up wickets regularly.

    Retained Players (4): Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Tristan Stubbs, and Abhishek Porel.

    Purse Remaining: 73 Crores.

    Final Thoughts

    In the IPL 2025 retention, all 10 teams have picked the players according to their needs. Some teams have a vision to create a new team going forward, while others have stuck with their core players. PBKS has the highest purse remaining after retaining just 2 players, allowing the management to go all out during the IPL 2025 auction. All franchises will need to build their team around the retained players while building an all-round team.
