Hardik Pandya became the fourth Indian cricketer to hold the IPL trophy after the newly-formed Gujarat Titans defeated Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2022 final. The all-rounder had a stellar season with the bat – 487 runs at a strike rate of 131.
IPL Winning Captains List – The Overseas Captains
In 2008, Rajasthan Royals snatched a thrilling win over Chennai Super Kings in the final at DY Patil Stadium. Shane Warne etched his name in the history books as the first captain to win the Indian Premier League (IPL) title. The legendary Aussie was also the head coach of the Royals, who haven’t reached an IPL final since winning the inaugural title.
Adam Gilchrist led now-defunct Deccan Chargers to silverware in the 2009 edition. The Chargers beat Royal Challengers Bangalore in the final by six runs. With 495 runs at a strike rate of 152, Gilchrist finished as the second-most run-getter in the season.
David Warner’s Sunrisers Hyderabad landed its first IPL title in the 2016 season. The Orange Army overcame Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore in the final by eight runs in a high-scoring thriller at Chinnaswamy Stadium. Warner led from the front, scored 848 runs, and took home the orange cap.

MS Dhoni has registered the most wins as captain in IPL. The legendary cricketer captained Chennai Super Kings in 210 matches and claimed 123 victories. However, Hardik Pandya has the best win percentage among players who led their team in more than ten matches in IPL. Under Hardik, Gujarat Titans won 11 of the 15 games – a 73% win percentage.
Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma is the youngest captain to win IPL. At 26, he guided Mumbai Indians to their maiden IPL trophy. Also, Rohit, behind Dhoni, has the second-most matches as captain in IPL. He has captained the Mumbai-based franchise in 143 matches. Sachin Tendulkar was Mumbai Indians’ skipper in the first three seasons.
