Matheesha Pathirana came into the IPL spotlight as he had an unorthodox bowling action similar to that of his fellow countryman Lasith Malinga. The Sri Lankan was picked up for ₹20 lakh in 2022 by Chennai Super Kings but was handed just two matches in his first season.
Nonetheless, he impressed as he grabbed two wickets on his IPL debut. In 2023, CSK skipper MS Dhoni took him under his wing and gave him a longer run, and the Sri Lankan youngster took full advantage, picking up 19 wickets.
